[blwa], Léon, französischer Schriftsteller, * Périgueux 11. 7. 1846, ✝ Bourg-la-Reine (bei Paris) 3. 11. 1917. In größter Armut lebend, wandte er sich entschieden gegen den materialistischen Zeitgeist und gegen den Reichtum als dessen Verkörperung, gegen Bürgertum und Klerus, gegen Lauheit in moralischen und in religiösen Fragen. Von religiösem Fanatismus beseelt, sah er sich als Verkünder Gottes in einer Welt ohne Gott. Er übte starken Einfluss auf die späteren Vertreter eines christlichen Humanismus aus (u. a. G. Bernanos, F. Mauriac, L. Estang, J. Maritain; Renouveau catholique) und inspirierte P. Claudel zu umfangreichen Bibelkommentaren. Sehr aufschlussreich sind seine (seit 1898 unter wechselnden Titeln erschienenen) Tagebücher.
